My apologies for taking so long to reply.
Plugged combined mic and headphones into two sockets supplied, did all 
as you sugest but still no sound. Am using "system test" in 
System-Administration. Similarly plugged usb mic into usb socket 
selected appropriatre hardware as below, checked input and output but 
still no sound. Using Skype sound test with internal mic I get a faint 
sound playback, I also managed to get a USB mic to work well but volume 
control dropdown box then failed to work. Have done a hard reboot using 
on/off switch all back as before. I suspect that my "System test" is not 
working properly...??????
Does any of the above make sense...????
Perhaps I could do a complete System test and file the report which I 
have not done to date..???

PS. I have a  HP desktop running 9.04 64bit quite well so Compaq 
Pressario CQ60 laptop is at the moment my test unit.
