@Robbie in #13: While adding console=tty6 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT does indeed hide any non-kernel messages, it also hides the emergency shell one gets if a manual fsck is necessary. usplash leaves you on tty1 when it exits, but the emergency shell is waiting for you on tty6.
