Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

The recent update to the gnome-media media package has introduced some
audio distortion that was not present before.

It seems that there is audio distortion at all volume levels, but it
becomes significantly more noticeable as I raise the volume above 100%
in the preferences window of the volume control applet.

I am using Karmic 64 bit Ubuntu Studio

Here are the most recent changelog notes from the gnome-media package:

gnome-media (2.28.1-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  * New upstream version:
    gnome-volume-control
    - Fix problems with the mute status when using the applet (lp: #413116)
    - Make output volume go up to 150% in the dialogue
    - Fix reversed labels for Rear/Front
  * debian/patches/99_autoconf.patch:
    - new version update

Also, it is annoying that the volume slider that appears when the applet
is clicked does not completely control the volume of the system any
more.
