This doesn't seem to have been an issue with video drivers for me - I am using nvidia video card and my drivers are up-to-date. I still see the exact same behavior with the latest intrepid.
I had setup Karmic alpha on my other desktop and I just checked today to see if the same issue happens there - it doesn't.
