I tested a bit, and it seems that standby's initiated from closing the laptop panel work (e.g. resume correctly upon opening the panel), but when manually initiating standby by clicking through the fusa applet, the laptop will not resume (as in the screen remaining dark). In such a case the laptop refuses to respond upon several userlevel keystrokes (such as ctrl-alt-delete), but does respond when rebooting with the magic sysrq key combination.
