This was solved by installing the PulseAudio Device Chooser and Volume
Control. Ubuntu has changed to using the PulseAudio sound utilities.

I did an upgrade install from Ubuntu 9.04 on this system - the installer
installed some PulseAudio components, but not those. I'm not sure if a
fresh install would do the same thing - to omit some of the necessary
PulseAudio software.

So this bug should be credited to the installation process, or
documentation, regarding replacement of the OSS or Alsa software with
PulseAudio.

The related bugs, regarding sound not working at all, are quite possibly
the same.

I haven't thoroughly checked out the operation yet of the Pulse Audio
software, but installing that and selecting an appropriate output mode
(there are many) made sound really blare out on the laptop's speakers.
