Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-switcher

On a freshly installed karmic beta 1 of unr on an eee pc. It starts off
in Ubuntu Netbook Desktop mode. Run the Switch Desktop Mode preference
which is the desktop-switcher app. Select and apply "Classic Desktop".
The switch fails, bringing up a gconf error alert which says:

"An errror occurred while loading or saving configuration information
for netbook launcher... Failed to contact configuration server...Details
- 1:could not send message to gconf daemon: message did not receive
reply (timeout by message bus)".

Afterwards, the desktop is in a funny state, showing both the netbook
desktop and the classic Applications/Places/System menus along the top
menu bar (screenshot).

Switching back and forth with Switch Desktop Mode fails in this maybe
50% of the time and the desktop eventually develops visual glitches,
such as a mouse drag of a window leaving a temporary trail. At some
point, the clock and all the gadgets that live in the upper right of the
menu bar disappear.

I've installed beta 1 a couple times chasing down this problem. On an
earlier install, netbook launcher would fail with a signal 11 segfault
in addition to the above gconf error alert, however on this install I
never see the segfault for some reason. Anyway, the segfault behavior of
netbook-launcher was similar but with some differences to that seen in
bug 420478, so this bug may be related -- it's hard to tell for certain.

** Affects: desktop-switcher (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
