I'd love to see a different behaviour as well. I agree on the fact that chat windows shouldn't be too intrusive, but even when I'm occupied I'd love to get _any_ indication of a new chat. Taavi's solution is indeed a neat one, and the current situation fits the 'invisible' status better IMHO (ie. when I want to work without getting disturbed, unless I initiate the chat myself). Especially when I already have a chat opened on another desktop, it wouldn't hurt opening the new chat in that window already.
