powersaved is another process that eats up RAM. Currently, to get my
machine into usable state, I do the following:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/powersaved stop
$ sudo /etc/init.d/ivman stop

After this, hald still uses a lot of CPU cycles, but at least my RAM
isn't consumed. Also, when memory usage rises, it's a signal that gnome-
power-manager is misbehaving, so I run this command once in a while:

$ killall -9 gnome-power-manager

Hope this helps others for now.
