The "standard" ubuntu isntallation chooses metacity on hardware that has
no reliable hardware acceleration. If your video driver is whitelisted,
compiz (AKA 'desktop effects') is enabled. You can easily check if the
gnome menus fade in and out softly or pop up instantely. (or go to
System->...->Appearance and check if desktop effects is enabled)
