I experience the problem with the upstream Firefox versions. It slows
down the computer, not only Firefox... I do not use Ubuntu's firefox so
I don't know if it is effected (though there are comments at upstream
that it is?) so I didn't report it here.

For now, upstream is saying that this may be due to bad handling of
transparent png and transferring workload to cpu.
