Thanks Alexander, I have run firefox in safe mode and everything seemed fine. Indeed visiting tiipsi.com and wordpress.com brought up prompts to install the Adobe flashplayer. I have finally managed to root out the shockwave flash player from the .mozilla/plugins directory (I was looking originally in mozilla-firefox/plugins), and when I get a chance later I'll try installing Adobe flash version 9. Touching wood of course :P
