Did this get fixed already, or worked around? I updated this morning, saw some sysv etc. updates and kernel 10.35, and have booted twice without nomodeset now without incident.
By the way, when I did have the problem, it was particularly troublesome on my Eee PC 1000HEB, because it apparently left the LCD brightness in an "off" state, even across cold reboots.
