I don't know if I'm the only one who has experienced this issue, but there are a number of postings in the Ubuntu development forum about sound problems in 9.10 alpha. I'm curious why you think this belongs with Gnome? Could the problem not be with another sound module, or even with VirtualBox, since it doesn't show up in VMware Fusion (with pulseaudio removed) and all other factors the same?
