I've just removed linux-source-2.6.17 from feisty, since it's superseded by newer versions (2.6.20). You should not attempt to regenerate its initramfs; if you had it installed before then, the one you had before would have worked just fine, and if you didn't, then you should use feisty's kernel.
mkinitrd does not work with current kernel versions. Don't use it. The current tool is mkinitramfs (or its wrapper, update-initramfs). To prevent people running into this problem, we should make mkinitrd refuse to generate an initrd for kernels without devfs support, and refer them to mkinitramfs or update-initramfs instead. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: linux-source-2.6.17 => initrd-tools Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- [feisty] kernel 2.6.17 in feisty repository cannot boot https://launchpad.net/bugs/84238 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
