@Thiago Crepaldi: Thank you for this new bit of data. I tested it with guake on Karmic, and -- as guake defaults to when installed -- I also found that I had no response to 'logname'.
I then set guake to run as a login shell (Preferences, "Run command as login shell"), and 'logname' returned a correct response.
