Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

release: 9.04
package version: *** 0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2

On my fujitsu u820, the wireless card kill switch does not work properly with
network-manager. When the switch is turned off, the wireless card and internal
bluetooth are turned off. However, when the switch is turned back on, only
bluetooth comes back on.
The issues are then, after the switch has been cycled once:
1) Network-manager disables itself and requires have "Enable Networking"
manually ticked back on.
2) "Enable Wireless" remains grayed out, regardless of the state of the kill
switch.

Playing with iwlist shows that wlan0 is set to down after the kill switch is
turned off. When it is turned back on, wlan0 remains down. Using ifconfig to
bring wlan0 up allows iwlist to use it, but network-manager still keeps "Enable
Wireless" grayed out.
Here is the output of sudo lspci -v for my wireless card
08:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network
Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

I just quickly did some further testing and found out this. If the
switch is quickly cycled, network-manager will disconnect and then
reconnect to the wireless network with no issues. However, if I turn the
switch off and allow network-manager to reach the point where it
disables itself, the above happens.
