It's not even just when the audio source is paused/idle any more. It just stopped in the middle of playing something.
pulseaudio process is still running. pulseaudio -k causes new process to be spawned but it doesn't help anything (that audio source is still inaudible). Why does Sound Preferences report "No application is currently playing or recording audio." Lies.
