I'm not sure why this bug is marked down as low in importance. I've had
2/2 machines have the same problem. It causes complete disruption of the
desktop. The gnome-panel doesn't show up anymore and sometimes the
terminals that are saved in my session don't have focus. So it is hard
to type commands.

Killing the gnome-panel seems to restore it. And right-clicking to
Change Desktop Background -> Visual Effects and toggling the effects
between None and Normal seems to restore the windows.

Bumping up the importance.
