Setting to confirmed since it was reported to me (via email) by upstream maintainer who said: So far as I have been able to assess, almost no one has a modem serviceable under Jaunty, using the 2.6.28 series kernels.
** Description changed: Hello, This issue was first reported to me by one of sl-modem upstream maintainers, that SmartLink modems are not usable on Jaunty in ALSA mode. A user was able to use the modem on Jaunty after compiling linux kernel 2.6.28-686 from Debian. + + The problem is as follows, sl-modem does detect the modem and one can + dial the number (using wvdial), but the connection does not get + established ! When I picked up a phone connected to the same line to + listen what's going on, I hear a only beginning of a handshake, but it + does not complete the handshake. Some background: The SmartLink modem daemon (provided by sl-modem-daemon package) is the application part of the driver for recent modems produced by Smart Link Ltd. It needs a kernel driver to access the hardware. Which can be recent ALSA (shipped with a newer kernel (>=2.6.4) with Alsa support and intel8x0m module) which is sufficient for basic operation and data/Internet connection. So, in ALSA mode, snd-hda-intel is the module used by sl-modem daemon.
