I have the same problem on a ASROCK AOD790GX mainboard. Without xorg-driver-fglrx it is running sideport only. With xorg-driver- fglrx (does not matter if I use proprietary or open-source ATI drivers) I get a BSOD instead of seeing GDM (the ubuntu boot screen is still fine). Also passing GDB and entering via root shell directly into x gives BSOD.
