I have the same (or similar problem): yesterday evening/late night
(CEST) I upgrade the system, just before the shoutdown.

This evening I restart the system, but the X System doesn't start
anymore.

>From console I made a apt-get dist-upgrade and after reboot nothing
change.

After a while a can find this bug report.... I made as suggested

sudo start dbus
sudo start hal
sudo start network-manager
sudo start gdm

When I login on gdm I get a lot of error: all related to creating files
...

I stop gdm, and I notice that I'm not log in in my home but on the
system root: that is no partition but the / was mounted (my /home is a
separate partition).

Then I logout as user and login as root and made
mount -a
and then
