Just to let you know how serious this bug is - it froze my terminal and I didn't know any way to get Gnome up and running. I reinstalled Karmic and found that on the first reboot Nautilus would not display my desktop or finish running. When I tried to install nvidia-glx-185, on next reboot my computer was a paperweight again.
