Public bug reported: I have a VIA 8237 chipset with Realtek AC 97 Onboard Sound on an MSI 6741 (K8MM-ILSR I think, memory's a little rusty) and no matter what I do, I can't get the sound to work at all. I have tried every forum, instruction, and troubleshooting guide I can find. I was originally trying to get this PC setup with Mythbuntu to replace Windows XP MCE 2005 (don't like paying Microsoft and wanted more features). Had great "out of the box" experience with Ubuntu on one of our laptops and decided to give it a shot. I have since tried Ubuntu, Ubuntu with XBMC, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu. Sound will not work on any no matter how much troubleshooting I do. I am about to try LinuxMCE but fear I will have the same results. There is no known compatibility issue with this chipset and/or sound card and all the information I have read in repositories and forums say it should work without a problem. I don't know that much about Linux but follow directions very well, learn quickly, and have a very acute sense of troubleshooting so I don't think it's something I'm doing/not doing wrong/incorrectly. I am using the latest version of Ubuntu and all derivatives (9.04 Jaunty Jackalope). The detected and installed sound module is SND-VIA82xx.
