Solved for me now... I ran into some problems with another application
and noticed that I had some directories in my home folder that belonged
to "root". After I had corrected this, my panel applets also started
working again. Perhaps this works for you too.

Here's the command to (re)set all the files and directories in your home
folder back to you as owner and group:

     sudo chown -R ${USERNAME}.${USERNAME} /home/$USERNAME/*

Enter this command as a normal user in a terminal.
