After installing Ubuntu 9x Desktop on my Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX I ran into
the same issue, after ctrl-alt-f2'ing to another login and running
"Top", it showed that WPA_Supplicant was using 97.9% of the CPU. Simply
turning off the built in wireless adapter resolved the issue. More or
less proving the issue is with the wireless adapter and WPA_Supplicant.
I will post again if and when I find a way to resolve the issue, or at
least proivide the hardware information causing the conflict.

(By the way, simply trying to kill the WPA_Supplicant process does not
work as it is automatically re-started)
