I can confirm this issue, but it is more severe than it seems. When Empathy crashed, the user has already signed in. Maybe a certain library Empathy uses already set to receive Internet traffic. A buddy sent me a message some while later, and the Empathy UI kept showing up and crashing and showing up. It would use up one of the CPU cores. I ended up reboot.
