Instead of logging out and in again, you can simply restart the gnome- panel to get your applets back:
1. Open a console window 2. Enter the following command: killall -SIGHUP gnome-panel 3. This should make your panel vanish and come back after a few seconds with all your applets. I had to use the same command recently for missing desktop icons. In this case, the application to restart was "nautilus", the full command was: killall -SIGHUP nautilus That did restore my desktop icons. I hope this minimizes your inconvenience through this disturbance. -- Gnome Applets fail on boot.
