Basically, I gave up on the whole cluster of bugs I'd reported with that box, waited until the release of 8.10, waited a few more months for the usual post-release shakedown, installed 8.10 without futzing with the LiveCD, and it pretty much works. I didn't update any of the bug reports, as nobody seemed to really care one way or the other. Given the catastrophe with KDE 4 in 9.04, I decided fiddling with that release wouldn't be a productive use of my time. Ditto Karmic, as I'm out of the alpha-testing biz. Might do an upgrade to the released version of 9.10 after a few months, but what's in there is working fine. So I guess you can mark this one as Closed and move on.
