This happens on latest Karmic too. So it seems the problem is that the port multiplier code doesn't really like the new generation of AMD SATA 7xx controllers.
if I could vote I would turn off the CONFIG_SATA_PMP by default or make it at least disable-able through a kernel config parameter.
