I edited /usr/share/xsessions/e-gnome.desktop and changed line 5 from "Exec=starte16 GNOME to "Exec=/usr/bin/starte16 GNOME"' as suggested above. It didn't work - same error.
I have also tried the suggestion of making a link from /usr/bin/starte16 to /usr/sbin/ which has apparently worked for other users (see Ubuntu forum thread above) but didn't work for me. There is a file named 'starte16' in /usr/bin/. Is there supposed to be a file named "starte16 GNOME" in /usr/bin/, or is the 'GNOME' part a command?
