Ok it works for me with facebook and gmail, and both use https. I think this may be happening because twitter.py sets the headers argument explicitly. In which case the solution is to simply move the authorization into the url (https://username:p...@blah), and allow urllib to set the headers appropriately (which is what I do with gmail, and it seems to work).
