Now for the problem:

trikst...@triksterx-desktop:~$ aplay
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver
returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned
error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned
error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:3985:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file or
directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2211:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:590: audio open error: No such file or directory

As you can see, there is a serious problem getting ALSA to detect my sound
card. I can not get any sound to play from my speakers at all. I have the
system turned on. All I get when I try to run a test sound is silence. I get
an error when I try to set sound playback in my sound properties to ALSA and
play a sound:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

I have attempted to upgrade ALSA with no results. I have purged and
reinstalled ALSA with no results. I have compiled the drivers for my
sound card from source, with no results. I have followed every tutorial
I can find that even remotely resembles my problem, with no results. It
is not a problem with multiple sound cards. I am only using my onboard
sound card. It is not a problem with BIOS settings, I have none for my
sound card. All cords are plugged in. I have a seperate partition with
8.04 Hardy on it and sound works perfect on that. It is what I have to
boot into every time I want to listen to music on my computer.

It would be nice if you would make some attempt to help solve the
problem, rather than send me to a useless basic troubleshooting guide
any noob would have tried before posting a bug. If you still don't have
enough info, let me know what you need and I'll post it. If I am
totally screwed on this problem, let me know so I can look for another
current OS that will support my card. Any kind of feedback would be
greatly appreciated.
