I also have this problem occasionally and also no combination of keystrokes will free up the system. Usually happens when I have a large number of files in the trash. Have so far gotten around it by keeping the trash relatively empty, but it happened again today with only two files in there!
Only thing that I can do is physically pull the plug. Otherwise the laptop will overheat as the fan won't kick in!
