Hi there, same problems on Jaunty 9.04 64bit with ATI HD3650 In my experience, update ATI drivers to latest version (if your card is supported by latest Catalyst) by downloading the installer from the ATI website and that will fix the restart/hibernate issues.
Update your xserver with the "no backfill" version and you will get occasional garbage as you resize windows or use other effects but the annoying delay will be gone. It would be nice to see this fixed in Karmic. Compiz has been very temperamental with ATI cards.
