Got the latest version of the intel driver this morning through synaptic updates. Apparently compiz now "works" without setting the indirect rendering option, i.e. I can see the windows on my desktop at long last. I have not done much testing beyond that apart from moving a few windows around and observing that transparency is finally there, which is cool.
HOWEVER, the top and bottom icon bars are gone, something that did not happen when running the indirect rendering option. Is that to be expected?
