1) Updater for GRUB1 configuration had such feature and I was using it; GRUB2 revoked such feature without any substitute. 2) I don't use memtest86 on a regular basis so I don't want to clutter the boot menu. On the other hand, I'd like to have memtest86 installed so that I could run it manually from grub prompt in case system does not boot - to eliminate the possible bad memory issue.
