Public bug reported:

Currently in the open source edition of VirtualBox there is no mechanism to
access a headless console. To initiate a headless console one only need to use
VBoxHeadless, but the open source edition does not have VRDP for remote
graphical access. Thus I propose a patch for the open source edition to
support VNC so that at least the console may be viewed. This has been
implemented by someone already and a patch was forwarded upstream. No action
has yet been seen. Here is the reference:
http://vbox.innotek.de/pipermail/vbox-dev/2009-April/001312.html

The benefit of a headless vnc console would be to introduce the
possibility of using VirtualBox in conjunction with libvirt which is
greatly beneficial for the many machines which still lack VT extensions.
Attached is the patch mentioned in the link above. It may need some
refinements especially for release to VBox 3.0, but that is a welcome
request if accepted.
