Thanks, Leann. I kept this open, hoping I would have time to test this--mostly for the benefit of others, since I have a working solution. Let's tidy up and close it. Best, -Alan

I sold my Sony drive. Other drives have worked just fine. I'm with you, close. I will download 9.10 and give it a whirl though, thanks for the link." @arsnova, since you are the original bug reporter, it's your call if you want to test and keep this open. -- persistent failure with DVD mounting, reading, writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238835 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I haven't been able to use my DVD burner (Sony DRU530A) since the release of Edgy (worked in Dapper); problem has persisted with each release since. No media (CDs and DVDs, regardless of content [data, audio, video; commercial or other]) can be mounted on the drive (scd1). The burner works in WinXP, and I recently loaded Windows to upgrade the firmware--this did not resolve any issues. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04. 'dmesg' produces no entries after physically inserting a disk. No fstab modifications ('auto', ordering, etc.) have worked. Since this drive worked quite well early on, I have to assume this is a bug. Could this be kernel related? The following, I hope, will be descriptive: ----------uname -r 2.6.24-18-generic =========================================== ----------mount -t udf /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 mount: No medium found =========================================== ----------cat /etc/fstab /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 =========================================== ----------hdparm -I /dev/scd1 /dev/scd1: ATAPI CD-ROM, with removable media Model Number: SONY DVD RW DRU-530A Serial Number: Firmware Revision: 2.1g Standards: Likely used CD-ROM ATAPI-1 Configuration: DRQ response: 3ms. I've created this separate report, since the drive won't mount any media.
