Some time ago, I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.28-15. No sound with my
standard login which I almost always use. As usual.

Shortly after that, for a completely unrelated reason, I used a
different login I had once created for testing purposes. And, to my
ultimate astonishment, sound worked with that one!

So I logged off my test account and logged in with my normal account. No sound.
Logging in with the test account. Sound.
The test account is member of less groups than my normal one. So this was not a
group thing.

I then used two simultaneously running KDE sessions to compare the audio
settings for the different accounts by using the "switch user" feature.

And all of a sudden, sound worked in my normal account, too. And it
continued to work up to now, even if I boot up and log in normally.

I have no clue why it didn't work before or why it works now. Maybe some
weird constellation thing with internal KDE 4 / Phonon settings and
newer kernels.

Would be very interesting to me if other KDE users with the same kind of
problem could confirm this.

My KDE release is 4.2.2.
