I had this same issue and couldn't find a solution anywhere.  What
finally fixed it for me was adjusting the printer features in the
driver.  I have a Dell 3130cn, and the default driver settings for the
printer included 1280 MB Memory, a RAM Drive and duplexer.  Mine has
none of these.  Once I adjusted the settings to match the printer, my
cups stopped crashing.

Kubuntu 9.04 + PPA KDE 4.3 packages.  Same version of cups.
