I can confirm that applying this patch to the standard 2.6.24-24-generic distribution and installing the resulting custom kernel seems to have solved the problem with the lid closing switch causing a kernel panic on the HP 6710B.
I'm not crazy about running a custom kernel, so bearing in mind that Gutsy is a long term support kernel, is it possible to make sure this patch makes its way into the general distribution?
