I'm using the ati opensource drivers in Karmic (xserver-xorg-video- ati_6.12.99+git20090629.f39cafc5-0ubuntu5_i386.deb), though AFAIR the problem was also there using nvidia proprietary drivers (but I'll also post the results with them when I can).
