Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-firmware
I have a previously working jaunty install on an IBM/Lenovo X31 with linux-firmware-1.11 and linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic. After boot the wireless network card does not work and the kernel reports: $ dmesg | grep 2100 | cut -f2 -d] ipw2100: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver, git-1.2.2 ipw2100: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKC ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: firmware: requesting ipw2100-1.3.fw ipw2100: eth1: ipw2100_verify failed: -5 ipw2100: eth1: Failed to power on the adapter. ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the firmware. $ lspic -vx ... 02:02.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04) Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 2551 Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 11 [virtual] Memory at c0200000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=4K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: ipw2100 Kernel modules: ipw2100 00: 86 80 43 10 00 00 90 02 04 00 80 02 00 00 00 00 10: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 86 80 51 25 30: 00 00 00 00 dc 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 02 22 ... Press Fn-F5 twice to reset the wireless card causes the kernel to print the same message. Reloading the module causes a new error: $ sudo rmmod ipw2100 && sudo modprobe -v ipw2100 WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/oss-compat, it will be ignored in a future release. insmod /lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2100.ko $ dmesg | grep 2100 | tail -6 | cut -f2 -d] ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: PCI INT A disabled ipw2100: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver, git-1.2.2 ipw2100: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002) ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKC ipw2100 0000:02:02.0: setting latency timer to 64 ipw2100Device not found via register read. (Since I can't reload the module, I haven't tried `echo 100 > /sys/class/firmware/timeout` - if that's worth trying please tell me which startup script I should add it to.)
