I'm also having the low-audio problem on a Dell Vostro 1320 in Hardy as well as Jaunty with all updates applied (today). Soundcard according to "lspci -vv" is: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Audio output works fine, but really quiet.
