I have a Dell Vostro 1520 running a patch current Jaunty (9.04) and I have the same/very similar symptoms as reported in this bug.
In my case, the laptop speakers work great. The earphone jack works great. The microphone jack does not work - I get an enormous amount of noise making whatever is recorded barely audible. Should I open a new ticket, or add data to this one? Very happy to add the data from alsa-info.sh if that helps.
