To further back borrell's case, running gedit under valgrind using the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for some reason allows gedit to run normally.
If I launch gedit directly I can get it to crash every time, but the "G_DEBUG=gc-friendly" stops gedit from crashing for some reason. Attached is my valgrind log of gedit crashing (run without the "G_DEBUG =gc-friendly").
