OK, than it is a problem with the mplayer version you are using. Can you try 
with the one from the official repo? I don't know what is different (I don't 
expect it to be different at all actually) but I don' t have this problem with 
that.
In any case, both versions are pretty old, and most probably still lack proper 
pulseaudio support.
