This is a severe usability bug. ISVs have to support a plethora of configurations if they provide versions for Linux at all (see Bug #1). So we should keep the barrier of entrance to the Linux market for ISVs as low as possible.
Often it is sufficient to use a 32 Bit version for all needs. AFAIK, on a 64 Bit Linux system every 32 Bit application gets a private 4 GB address space which is sufficient in many cases. For example, I want to use Beyond Compare from ScooterSoftware. They only provide a 32 Bit version because their application is written in Delphi and they cannot change easily to a 64 Bit compatible platform. Anyway, for a file and directory merge tool, a 32 Bit version is more than sufficient. Maybe this bug is not resolved because the perfect solution calls for sets of categories and transformations (bridges) for compatible tags. But a small solution would already help me: Allow to install a 32 Bit version on a 64 Bit system, if there is no 64 Bit version installed. Automatically install the 32 Bit compatibility libs (add them as dependencies). This is all for solving the most pressing need. Later, the solution can be enhanced with conflict management and a general concept for these kinds of problems. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot-Package Installer - bcompare.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29574806/Screenshot-Package%20Installer%20-%20bcompare.png -- gdebi in Ubuntu 64 bits can't install ubuntu 32 bits packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/141531 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
