it's been happening only for a few days, i think it must be one of the upgrades 
but i can't figure out which...
(grep 'configure ' /var/log/dpkg.log* | gzip > /upgrades.gz # see attachment)

ctrl-c/ctrl-z works with csh, it doesn't work with bash
on the console everything works as expected

clients i tried: 
- os x stock ssh
- putty
- some java based ssh client

i also use karmic, the kernels i tried it with were:
- vmlinuz-2.6.30-9-server
- vmlinuz-2.6.27-14-server

bash versions i tried:
- 3.2-5ubuntu2 3.2-5ubuntu2 
- 3.2-4ubuntu1 3.2-4ubuntu1
